Island hop!

To be honest, Hydra almost works best when you give up on 'to do' & 'must see/try' lists.

Go with the flow, the longer you stay the better it gets.  Mornings easily melt into afternoons, then into long, warm nights. Trust us, you'll completely lose track of time here but never feel bored!

We often end up abandoning our plans and simply idle & explore at will.

Saying that, while you're here there are many other charming Greek islands nearby.

There are lots of boats offering day trips from the harbour or head over on a ferry & stay. Here's some of our favourite places close by...

Ferry stops

Your ferry to Hydra will often stop at Poros, Spetses, Porto Heli, Aegina, Agistri, and/or Ermioni, so it's very easy to integrate visits to these islands before or after your Hydra trip.

Porto Cheli

Porto Cheli

Also known as Porto Heli. A 50min ferry ride from Hydra.

This mainland town is the heart of the Athenian riviera and where the rich and famous have their villas!

Whilst being a small town it has lots of fine dining restaurants. It’s also home to Nikki Beach if you're in need of a glamourous beach club scene.

Spetses

Only a 35 minute ferry ride from Hydra is beautiful Spetses. Best discovered by renting a moped or quad bike. This island is a getaway for locals during the long summer. Great beaches and amazing scenery.

Poros

Just 30 minutes from Hydra via ferry this sleepy island was originally considered home of the Greek god Poseidon. Quiet yet cosmopolitan filled with pine trees, crystal clear beaches, a lively waterfront with shops, cosy cafes and restaurants, grand traditional mansions and cobbled streets. It's also been declared a protected settlement.

Further afield

If you're keen to visit some of the most 'famous' Greek islands, you will need to go via Athens (Piraeus). Here are the approximate ferry times from Hydra, otherwise you can fly from Athens.

  • Mykonos ~5 hours

  • Paros & Milos ~5 hours

  • Santorini ~7 hours

  • Zakynthos ~8 hours

  • Crete & Corfu, best to fly from Athens otherwise ~10 hours
