The closest airport to Hydra Island is Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos AIA).

AIA is the largest airport in Greece, and extremely well connected to Europe, and is the hub for Aegean Airlines.

If planning a visit to Athens beforehand, the city is about 10km/~30 minute drive away & a taxi to the centre of town will cost ~€50.

Piraeus is big! Tell the driver you're heading for Hydra and need to be near gate E8-E9.

Ferries

You will lazily drift into Hydra an hour or so after leaving Athens.

Hellenic Seaways & Alpha Lines operate ferries from Piraeus port to Hydra, with 5-8 crossings a day in Summer. Tickets are ~€28 per person, each way.

As a rough guide sailings are often ~8am, 10am, 1pm, 5pm, 7:30pm, with more running Thursday-Sunday.

Some sailings are direct to Hydra, so you'll arrive in an hour, others have one or two relaxed stops beforehand taking two hours max. Don't worry if you can't see many dates and times if looking at Summer '22, full schedules aren't released until a month beforehand. This is Greece, relaaaax!

We suggest leaving 2 1/2-3 hours between your flight and the ferry departure. If things are looking dicey, call Hellenic/Alpha up to one hour before the sail time and they'll move you onto another ferry!

Ferry Tickets

Sailings are smooth and easy through the Saronic islands, so any ferry will be fine! Saying that, our favourite is Alpha Lines.

 Favourite:

Alpha Lines uses a new 'Speedcat', so it's the quietest, smoothest and fastest boat. Plus it has no diesel smell and it's the only boat with a sundeck!

You can book Alpha Line tickets online, at Piraeus port or in Hydra's town.

Alpha Lines depart from gate E9 in Piraeus Port, and the ticket office is right next door.

Ferry Tips Cont...

You can book all ferry tickets online anytime, you can also book one way then decide once you're on the island when you want to head back or if you want to visit another island etc. You don't need to stress too much about having these booked well in advance!

There are also ferry ticket offices on Hydra.

You can book ferries through comparison sites, but generally the below link offers the cheapest prices.

Pre-Book A Car

You can easily grab a taxi at Athens airport any time, but if you would prefer to have a professional driver ready and waiting for you, here's a few people we recommend booking:

If there's a few of you travelling together (up to seven) Alexandros Papadopoulos has a Mercedes Vito & will meet you in the arrivals hall. Call/text him on +30 697 492 6581.

For a taxi, call or text Michael Pantelis on +(30) 6944 646 761.

Another great taxi driver (he will likely play you some bangers while en route) is Alexandros his number is +30 698 038 9488.
